A 16th century villa to rent, close to Florence
Villa Piccini is an estate in
the Tuscan hills above the Certosa (an historic monastery), with views
of Florence and its cathedral from this spot south of the city. It has
a swimming pool.
Lying 5km south west of Florence and 2.5km from the exit on the A1
motorway, this villa is superbly situated in countryside yet with easy
access to the city. The airport at Florence is just 15km away.
Monastery Certosa of Galluzo, one of the most important monasteries
in Europe, was four centuries a focus for pilgrimages. Before Napoleon’s
depredations, the monks had amassed more than 500 exquisite works of
art. Today, there are still works to admire and the monastery is still
occupied by the Cistercian monks.
The owners, the Piccini family, have converted some small stone buildings
on the property into five apartments.
The old villa within its own hamlet, was built in the 16th century
to look down on Florence. The city is only 15 minutes by car, and there
are several other larger villages within ten minutes’ drive of
the villa. Tavarnuzze, 3km away, has grocery shops, wine shops and
a market, tennis courts, a filling station and a bank.
During the restoration of the hamlet the five apartments were modelled
and share, with the owners, a large enclosed parkland and a 12m x 6m
swimming pool with views of Florence. Each apartment has a small private
outdoor area, but guests are free to use all of the grounds. Irises
grow wild, there are citrus trees and extensive lawns.
