This apartment (sleeps 4 + 1) is located in one of the oldest and most charming
quarters of Rome. In the heart of ancient Rome, Appartamento Mattei is a wonderfully
attractive 2nd floor flat, with air-conditioning and elevator. This area has
narrow streets and the original buildings were not built for elevators and
air
conditioning, but the Mattei apartment, owned by one of the four most respected
families in Lazio, is such a find. It is in the most desirable location imaginable
on a small and lovely ancient square.
The apartment is on the second floor of the family palazzo, which was built
in the 16th and 17th centuries. The private quarters contain an incredible art
collection, which if you are very lucky, the owners might invite you to see.
It has never been open to the public or listed in any art books and of museum
quality. The apartment overlooks the small square, with its pretty fountain
in the centre.
The location is also perfect since it is near the Tiber River next to Isola
Tiberina (Tibernia Island) and the Teatro di Marcello. From here it is an easy
walk to the Campo de' Fiori each morning to pick up flowers, vegetables and
fresh bread at the daily morning open-air market. Later, guests can stroll to
the Forum, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, or across the river to enchanting Trastevere,
famous for its narrow streets and cozy restaurants. That said, you need not
cross the river to find a restaurant. One of the top restaurants in Rome, Piperno,
is 2 blocks away and another of our favorites is in the back of this palazzo,
which covers almost a block. The location is 3 or 4 blocks from the Torre Argentina
Square, a transportation hub, where guests can catch trams and buses to the
Vatican, the metro and the central train station.
